We have been asked if we could repeat the September 2016, Carthago Owners UK, visit to Zell
am Ziller, to coincide with the Almabtrieb.
The Almabtrieb is a delightful festival, when the local farmers bring their cattle down from the
high alpine pastures to the valley for the winter. The cattle are all dressed in traditional head
decorations and have no fear of humans being near them. It is a great celebration with dancing,
music, feasting and drinking.
As part of our group event, we intend to arrange a dinner at the campsite restaurant, a dinner at a lovely hotel
restaurant in town and hopefully, a lunch at the high alpine restaurant.
Zell am Ziller is a delightful Tyrolean town with plenty to see and do. www.tyrol.com/places/a-zell-am-ziller
There are delightful alpine walks and cycle rides. Or, take your bike on the train up to Mayrhofen, have lunch
and then freewheel home along the riverside. If there is sufficient interest, we will try to repeat a lunch at
Hirschbichalm. This is a restaurant high up the mountains with amazing views and good food. The road up is a
bit winding and not suitable for motorhomes but local taxis or coach will be arranged.
Camping Hofer is a beautiful campsite with all facilities. It is located in the town and is an easy walk to shops,
cafés, restaurants and the steam railway. We have stayed here several times and the family owners are
always welcoming and helpful. There is an on site restaurant which serves very good food.
Travelling:
You can reach Zell am Ziller on quiet main roads from southern Germany. You will not need to buy a Go-Box.
We will enter Austria immediately south of Munich and probably stay at Achensee for a few days before
travelling on to Zell am Ziller, which is just a 45 minute journey. Achensee is a beautiful spot.
If you are a fit walker, you can walk down the western lakeside to Pertisau, and then take the lake steamer
back to Scholastika (which is right next door to the Achensee campsite). Or just cruise on the lake. There is also
a cycle track along the eastern lakesdside to the southern end, at Maurach, with lovely cafés en route!
